Plumbing Emergencies Happen Without Warning
A burst pipe at 2 AM. A sewer backup on a holiday. A water heater flooding your garage. Plumbing emergencies don't follow a schedule, and the first few minutes matter most.
Here's what to do right away to protect your home and minimize damage while you wait for a plumber.
Step 1: Shut Off the Water
The single most important thing you can do is stop the water flow.
- For a specific fixture (toilet, sink): Look for the shutoff valve near the fixture and turn it clockwise.
- For a major leak or burst pipe: Locate your home's main water shutoff valve and turn it off. In most Northern California homes, this is near the front of the house, often near the water meter.
**Tip:** Every homeowner should know where their main shutoff valve is *before* an emergency happens. Take a minute today to locate yours.
Step 2: Turn Off the Water Heater
If you've shut off the main water supply, turn off your water heater to prevent overheating and damage. For gas water heaters, turn the gas valve to the "off" position. For electric units, switch off the breaker.
Step 3: Open Faucets to Drain Remaining Water
After shutting off the main valve, open faucets at the lowest point in your house. This drains remaining water from the pipes and reduces pressure, which can slow or stop the leak.
Step 4: Contain the Water
Use towels, buckets, and mops to contain standing water. If water is near electrical outlets or your electrical panel, avoid contact and turn off the electricity at the breaker box if you can do so safely.
Step 5: Document the Damage
Take photos and video of the damage for your insurance company. Document the source of the leak, affected areas, and any damaged belongings.
Step 6: Call a Licensed Plumber
Now that you've minimized the damage, call a professional. Ameca Plumbing offers emergency plumbing services 7 days a week for homeowners in Esparto, Woodland, Davis, Vacaville, Sacramento, and all of Northern California.
